การเพาะปลูกของเกษตรกรในปัจจุบัน สิ่งที่มีความจำเป็นและสำคัญที่สุด คือ ความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของดิน ความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของดินจะได้มาจากการที่มีอินทรียวัตถุสะสม อยู่ในดินปริมาณมาก จุลินทรีย์ดินจะใช้อินทรียวัตถุเป็นสารอาหาร แล้วปลดปล่อยแร่ธาตุที่ จำเป็นให้แก่พืชในปริมาณที่พืชต้องการอย่างเพียงพอ ซึ่งได้แก่ ธาตุอาหารหลัก ( ไนโตรเจน-N, ฟอสฟอรัส-P2O5 และโพแทสเซียม-K2O ) ธาตุอาหารรอง ( ซัลเฟอร์, แคลเซียม และแมกนีเซียม ) และจุลธาตุ ( แมงกานีส, ทองแดง, โบรอน, โมลิบดินัม, เหล็ก, คลอรีน, สังกะสี และนิกเกิล) ดังนั้น การเติมความอุดมสมบูรณ์ให้กับดินวิธีหนึ่ง คือ การใช้ปุ๋ยหมัก หรือปุ๋ยอินทรีย์ ซึ่งนอกจากจะเป็นการเพิ่มแร่ธาตุให้กับพืชแล้วปุ๋ยอินทรีย์ ยังช่วยลดความเป็นกรดของดินที่เกิดจากการใช้ปุ๋ยเคมี และสารกำจัดวัชพืชและศัตรูพืชมา อย่างยาวนานได้อีกด้วย
ในอดีตก่อนที่จะมีการผลิตปุ๋ยเคมีขึ้นในโลกเกษตรกรในประเทศไทยมีการสร้างความ อุดมสมบูรณ์ให้กับดินในการเพาะปลูก โดยการใช้มูลสัตว์ต่างๆ เช่น มูลโค,มูลกระบือ และมูลไก่ เป็นต้น ประเทศไทยในขณะนั้นสามารถส่งออกข้าวได้เป็นที่ 1 ของโลกมาโดยตลอด ทั้งที่ไม่มีปุ๋ย เคมีใช้แต่ปัจจุบันภายหลังจากการ “ปฏิวัติเขียว” หรือการนำปุ๋ยเคมีเข้ามาจำหน่าย ในประเทศไทย ประมาณ ปี พ.ศ.2503 การเกษตรกรรมของไทยก็ได้ใช้ปุ๋ยเคมี สารเคมี และยาฆ่าหญ้าอย่างหนัก โดยลืมที่จะเติมความอุดมสมบูรณ์ให้กับดินเหมือนแต่ก่อน การใช้ปุ๋ยเคมีและสารเคมีอย่างยาวนาน 40-50 ปี นั้นได้ทำให้ดินเพาะปลูกเสื่อมสภาพลงอย่างมาก กลายเป็นดินทีแน่นแข็งและเป็นกรด รากพืชไม่สามารถชอนไชหาอาหารได้ดีความเป็นกรดของดินทำให้เกิดการละลายของธาตุอะลูมิเนียม ออกมาแล้วดูดซึมเข้าทางรากพืช ทำให้พืชไม่แข็งแรงกลายเป็นโรคง่ายและเชื้อราที่เป็นสาเหตุของ โรคพืชบางชนิดยังทำงานได้ดีในดินที่เป็นกรดอีกด้วย ปัจจุบันเกษตรกรยังคงต้องใช้ปุ๋ยเคมีและ สารเคมีเพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกปี ทำให้มีต้นทุนสูงขึ้น และในขณะเดียวกันการเผาทำลายเศษพืชในแต่ละครั้ง ก็ส่งผลให้อินทรียวัตถุและจุลินทรีย์ดินที่มีอยู่น้อยพลอยสลายตัวหายไปอีก

However, since the “Green Revolution” and the introduction of chemical fertilizers in the 1960s, Thai agriculture has heavily relied on chemical inputs, neglecting traditional soil fertility practices. This prolonged use of chemicals has led to soil degradation, characterized by hardness, acidity, and poor root penetration, making plants susceptible to disease.
To restore soil fertility, farmers should stop burning plant residues and instead use them to produce high-quality organic fertilizers. These organic fertilizers can increase organic matter content, improve soil fertility, and reduce reliance on chemical inputs, resulting in lower costs and higher productivity. Additionally, this approach can help restore soil structure, promote earthworm activity, and improve plant health, leading to better yields and reduced environmental impact.
